Jodie Sweetin Opens Up About John Stamos's Role in Her Sobriety Journey
More than just TV family, their friendship is built on a foundation of recovery, where being an example speaks louder than any promotion.

For years, fans saw them as TV niece and uncle. Off-screen, Jodie Sweetin says she and John Stamos share a deeper, more personal bond forged in recovery.
"John and I really, really connected in a lot of ways over [sobriety]," she said, per Us Weekly.
Sweetin has been open about her past struggles with addiction. According to Us Weekly, she previously said, "I got sober for good on December 7, 2008. I was flying to L.A. and I ended up taking a bunch of Nyquil and drinking a s***load."
Stamos, 62, has walked a similar path.
A Principle of Recovery
Sweetin emphasized that their support is rooted in a core recovery principle. "We have been there to celebrate each other’s big successes and milestones, and I am so glad that I got to be an example of attraction rather than promotion, which is a big principle in recovery," She explained the idea is to lead by example: "[The principle is] don’t beat people over the head. Just be the result of all of your work, and chances are, people that are looking will find you."
Their friendship has endured for decades.
Sweetin has spoken about the impact of getting sober, revealing in a 2016 Dancing With the Stars episode that it caused "a huge shift in my life." She noted, "Everything I had known from the time I was 5 years old suddenly ended [after Full House] and it was like saying goodbye to a family I had loved very, very much. At such a young age it really was a huge loss for me, I didn’t know how to grieve. Drugs and alcohol just sort of numbed everything."
