Mara Wilson Opens Up About a 'Matilda' Sequel: 'It Could Be Possible'

Mara Wilson discussed the potential for a sequel to the 1996 film Matilda while attending the Fanboy Expo in Tennessee, according to Deadline.

The former child star, who played the titular telekinetic prodigy, told the audience she is often asked about a follow-up film. "People always ask me about doing a Matilda 2. And that could be possible," she said, as reported by People.

Wilson expressed reservations about a common fan idea for a sequel plot. "But one thing that people always say is, ‘Oh, maybe it could be Matilda’s daughter.’ And I have some issues with that, because I think Matilda’s powers come from her adversity," she explained. She argued that Matilda's abilities stemmed from overcoming hardship and that a good parent would shield their child from such trauma. Wilson also joked about who could possibly be worthy of Matilda as a partner, asking, "Who’s good enough for Matilda?"

How Does She Feel About Being Called 'Matilda' Now?

Wilson also reflected on her past discomfort with being so closely linked to the character. "I used to be a little annoyed when people would call me Matilda because I was like, ‘No, I’m Mara,'" she recalled. She compared it to being called by a cooler sibling's name. Her perspective has since shifted, inspired by Carrie Fisher's relationship with Princess Leia. Wilson now sees Matilda as a role model, noting they share values like advocating for mental health and supporting public libraries. "I feel like Matilda has really taught me a lot of good lessons," she said.
