Mike Preston, 'Mad Max 2' and 'Homicide' Actor, Dies at 93

Mike Preston, the actor who played the settler leader Pappagallo in the action classic "Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior," died on June 8 in Florida. He was 93 years old. His death was confirmed to Variety by his wife, Josie Preston.

Preston's career was a varied one. Born Jack Davis, he first found success as a singer in the United Kingdom in the late 1950s, scoring several hits. He later moved to Australia, where he worked as a nightclub performer and hosted the popular variety show "In Melbourne Tonight."

His move into acting led to a prolific television career. He appeared in 42 episodes of the long-running Australian police drama "Homicide" as Detective Bob Delaney. Preston also had roles in series like "Bellbird," "Cop Shop," and "Chopper Squad." On the big screen, his first feature film role was in 1969's "Stoney." Beyond "The Road Warrior," he also led the 1983 sci-fi film "Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn" as the title character.

In the 1980s, he relocated to the United States, where he took on guest roles in numerous American series. He appeared on "The A-Team," "Remington Steele," "Airwolf," and "Law & Order," among others. His last credited role was a voice part in the 2002 video game "The Getaway."

Preston is survived by his wife, Josie Preston, and two daughters.
