Plas Johnson, Saxophonist Behind Iconic ‘The Pink Panther’ Theme, Dies at 94

Saxophonist Plas Johnson, whose tenor saxophone solo defined the iconic theme song for the 1963 film “The Pink Panther,” died on July 15. He was 94.

His children, Eric and Stephanie, confirmed his passing to The New York Times, sharing that he died at his home in Los Angeles, Calif. According to the family, Johnson was still performing actively, having played at his retirement community just a month prior. A cause of death was not shared.

Born Plas John Johnson Jr. on July 21, 1931, in Donaldsonville, La., he began playing the soprano saxophone at age 12. He later moved to Los Angeles, where he became a sought-after session musician.

Johnson’s studio work was prolific. He recorded theme songs for television shows including “The Monkees,” “Mannix,” and “The Odd Couple.” He also performed with a wide range of artists, from Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald to The Beach Boys, contributing to their celebrated 1966 album “Pet Sounds.” His piccolo solo is featured on Bobby Day’s 1958 track “Rockin’ Robin.”

How is he remembered?

While his session career spanned decades, Johnson remains best known for his work on “The Pink Panther Theme,” composed by Henry Mancini for the Blake Edwards film. He notably recorded a new version of the theme for the 2006 remake starring Steve Martin.

Johnson is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carol, his children Eric, Stephanie, Philip, Cheryl, David, and Denise, eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
