Sean Penn Makes Lifelong Pledge to Avoid Awards Ceremonies

Sean Penn has declared he will never attend another awards ceremony. The 65-year-old actor made the announcement during an interview with CNN's Kaitlan Collins at the Tribeca Film Festival, as reported by OK! Magazine on July 19, 2026.

Penn explained his decision to skip events like the 2026 Oscars stems from the intense social pressure they create. "It’s not just [that it’s] an awards show," he said, describing these ceremonies as causing him "social discomfort.". He emphasized the anxiety of being forced to engage with many people in a limited time.

The Oscar winner for Mystic River and Milk has now set a strict personal boundary. "I’m now down, committed for life, that I won’t go anywhere to be in a designated group beyond eight people," he stated, cementing a lifelong rule. Penn reflected on his past Oscar wins, saying he felt relief upon winning because so many people had worked hard for it.

Prioritizing his mental health, Penn informed his co-stars that missing such events would be beneficial for him. Instead of attending the Oscars this year, he traveled to Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelensky and was presented with a handmade "IronOscar" statuette from Ukrainian Railways CEO Oleksandr Pertsovskyi.
