Disney's Live-Action 'Moana' Creatives Detail Push for Cultural Authenticity

At the premiere of Disney's live-action Moana, the film's creatives emphasized their dedication to cultural authenticity and representation, according to a report from Variety. Dwayne Johnson, who stars as Maui, reflected on the personal significance of the project, noting he rarely saw himself represented in media growing up.

What did the cultural team focus on?

Lead consultant Dr. Grant Muāgututiʻa and choreographer Tiana Nonosina Liufau detailed specific efforts to accurately portray Polynesian culture. Liufau worked with dancers from across the Pacific Islands, embedding traditional moves like the Ori Tahiti and Siva Samoa into the musical numbers. "It wasn’t that we were looking for one specialized island form," she said. Her goal was to ensure the community saw themselves on screen, crafting choreography that showed the dancers' faces.

Muāgututiʻa's team focused on authentic details, from how characters interact in village council scenes to Moana's specific mannerisms when addressing elders. He also highlighted the importance of correct Samoan pronunciation in key scenes, including a traditional war dance.

Why does the cast say this matters?

For the actors, the project carries deep personal and cultural weight. Frankie Adams, who plays Sina, found the Pacific Islander dance moves emotionally resonant. "My mom was a big part of the cultural groups growing up. My sisters and I did Samoan dances throughout our childhood, so that was quite nostalgic for me to revisit that," she said.

John Tui, who plays Chief Tui, admitted to initial nerves about translating the animated film to live-action. "We had so much riding on our shoulders," he said. Upon seeing the final elements, he felt immense pride. "We gave it a crack, and that our fight, our families, and the shoulders of ancestors that we’ve stood on are proud of that."

Rena Owen, who plays Gramma Tala, pointed out a foundational fact: "Every single person on that screen is of Polynesian descent." She credited Johnson's passion for his Samoan heritage with helping open the door for this representation. The film is scheduled for release in July 2026.
