Octavia Spencer Confirms 'Ma 2' Is 'Definitely Happening'

Blumhouse, the production company behind the original film, has confirmed the sequel is on track for a 2025 release. In a statement announcing the project, CEO Jason Blum highlighted the film's lasting cultural impact. "Ma has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release in 2019, with fans eagerly embracing the film and Octavia’s iconic performance as Ma," Blum said. "Ma likes to say, ‘Don’t make me drink alone,’ so we’re thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round."

Why is a sequel happening now?

Spencer noted the original film's popularity surged long after its theatrical run, finding a massive new audience on streaming. She referenced this during her interview, saying, "I was filming in Prague last year. It’s been six, seven years since we did that movie. It was the number six movie in the world on Netflix." This sustained popularity helped fuel demand for a follow-up. The 2019 film, directed by Tate Taylor, follows a lonely woman who befriends a group of teenagers, letting them party in her basement before her hospitality turns into a deadly obsession.
