Octavia Spencer Confirms 'Ma 2' Sequel Is 'Definitely Happening'

Octavia Spencer confirmed a sequel to the 2019 horror film "Ma" is officially in development, according to a report from Decider. The Oscar-winning actress will reprise her role as the murderous Sue Ann, also known as Ma.

Spencer shared the update during a July 23 appearance on "Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen." She stated the project is moving forward, telling the host, "We are working very very hard to make sure the script is great." She added a note for the film's dedicated fans: "Because you guys are a rabid fanbase and if I’m gonna kill somebody I need to do it right."

Production studio Blumhouse has officially confirmed the sequel is on the way for a 2025 release. While a specific date has not been set, the project is in its early stages with a script being finalized. In a statement, Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum highlighted the original film's lasting impact, calling it a "social phenomenon" and expressing excitement that Spencer would return "for a second round."

Spencer revealed the 2019 film experienced a surprising surge in viewership long after its initial release. "I was filming in Prague last year. It’s been six, seven years since we did that movie. It was the number six movie in the world on Netflix," she said. This delayed viral success, fueled by memes and soundbites online, helped cement the film's status as a cult classic and built fan demand for a continuation of the story.

The sequel, currently referred to as "Ma 2," will follow Sue Ann as she lives in the Pacific Northwest working as a real estate agent, only for her violent past to resurface.
