Ruari Spooner has joined the cast of the upcoming comedy film Bender, according to Deadline.

Filming is currently underway in Belfast for the project, described as a coming-of-age story set in late-’70s Dublin. The film draws from the post-punk experiences of writer Adrian Cunningham and is set against the frenzy of an impending papal visit.

Spooner will portray the leader of a hopeless but resourceful gang of teenage misfits. According to the report, Bill Burr's character—a gruff American record-store owner—convinces the gang that their best chance to lose their virginity before graduating is at a massive open-air mass for the visiting Pope.

The story follows a suburban Dublin family navigating mounting financial pressures during a bleak economic recession. The script was penned by Adrian Cunningham and Ciaran Bartlett. Michael Medico (XO, Kitty) is directing the film, with Bill Burr also serving as an executive producer.
