Boy Harsher Announces New Album 'GET MEAN' and North American Tour

Boy Harsher will release a new album this September. According to multiple outlets, the darkwave duo's forthcoming record, 'GET MEAN,' is due out September 18 via Atlantic Records.

The announcement marks the band's major label debut. Alongside the album news, Boy Harsher shared a new single and music video for the track 'Hard Beat.'

What is the album 'GET MEAN' about?

The album is described as a meditation on love, loss, and survival. It confronts grief and heartbreak directly, tracing a path through personal turmoil toward renewal. The record arrives after a period of significant change for the duo, comprised of Jae Matthews and Augustus Muller, including the end of their romantic relationship in early 2024.

Matthews has described the album as "what I had to give during the most extreme period of my life." The writing process began after Matthews embarked on a period of travel, with the album ultimately being recorded in eight locations across the United States, Mexico, and Italy.

What is the new single 'Hard Beat' about?

The duo also released a music video for the new single 'Hard Beat,' which they co-directed with cinematographer Owen Smith-Clark. The video explores themes of surveillance, deviance, and trauma, drawing influence from Helmut Newton's photography and the queer punk aesthetic of filmmaker Greg Araki. It features performers Cheeky Ma and Mo Stark, with movement choreographed by performance artist Monica Mirabile.

When is the Boy Harsher tour?

To support the album, Boy Harsher will embark on a North American headline tour this fall.

Select dates on the tour are already sold out, including shows in Chicago, Portland, Seattle, and Los Angeles. Support on various dates will come from Choir Boy, Evanora Unlimited, True Blue, and Kassie Krut.

Boy Harsher formed in 2014 and has cultivated a dedicated following in the underground music scene. The duo is also currently at work on their debut feature film, The Lonely Woman, which will star Chloë Sevigny, FKA twigs, and Sturgill Simpson.
