HBO's Harry Potter Cinematographer Says Filming Is 'Brutal' Due to Young Stars' Schedules

Adriano Goldman, the cinematographer for HBO’s upcoming "Harry Potter" series, says the filming conditions are "brutal" due to the young cast’s strict shooting schedules. He made the comments in a recent interview with Andre Pilli, according to a report from Variety.

Goldman explained that the camera team must work around the limited availability of the show’s young stars, including Dominic McLaughlin (Harry Potter), Alastair Stout (Ron Weasley), and Arabella Stanton. "You have to shoot really fast, and the faster you go, the more you compromise quality," he said. "There’s no way around it, right? Obviously, we have a lot of resources, but it’s brutal. The kids’ screen time is really brutal."

How do they manage the schedule?

Goldman described a specific methodology where the team essentially pre-shoots scenes while the young actors are in their on-set classes. He said the actors come to set for about an hour and a half, and the schedule demands he complete six setups before they have to leave. "It’s really hard; you shoot everything out of order, right, because of that kind of scheduling," Goldman noted. "So the process is really complicated, but I’ve done one now."

Part of the reason for the strict timelines is that the child stars have to balance on-set schooling with filming. A BBC report from July 2025 noted that Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden built a temporary school facility for the show’s many young actors. The permitted facility can serve up to 600 pupils during peak periods for large crowd scenes but typically serves about 150 students.
