Jennifer Garner Shares How the '13 Going on 30' Reboot Will Honor the Original's Magic
The original star and new executive producer dishes on the Netflix project, her adorable successor, and the legacy of the late director.

What does a beloved rom-com do for an encore? Jennifer Garner is giving fans a peek behind the curtain of the upcoming Netflix reboot of her 2004 hit, '13 Going on 30.'
The actress, who is also an executive producer on the new project, shared details about how it will honor the original film. Speaking to E! News at the Los Angeles premiere of The Five Star Weekend on July 8, Garner pointed to the enduring spirit of the film's late director, Gary Winick. "I feel like the legacy of our director Gary Winick, who died of brain cancer after we wrapped that movie, [continues]," she said. "It just makes me so happy."
Garner is passing the torch to a new generation. The reboot stars Emily Bader and Logan Lerman. The original star had nothing but praise for her successor, telling E! News, "That little Emily, she's adorable."
As for what the new version will actually entail, plot details are being kept tightly under wraps. Even Garner admits she's in the dark. "I don't really know what it's going to be," she confessed. "But I think people will have a blast watching it."
The original film, which starred Garner as Jenna Rink opposite Mark Ruffalo's Matt Flamhaff, became an instant classic. Its legacy, however, came with some unexpected side effects for Garner's family. She previously revealed on Not Gonna Lie that the movie's popularity led to some "tortured years" for her kids. She explained that it was showing up at birthday parties and sleepovers, and her kids were mortified and upset to see her sad or in love, finding it cringe.
Garner shares three children—Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 13—with ex-husband Ben Affleck. A fresh take on the story might finally give her family a break from the cringe. For now, fans can look forward to seeing how the magic gets a new spin.
